Purchase tickets before you arrive for your selected time entry. Additional cost for special exhibits like the Queen’s Jewels. Free audio tour included with the price of admission, and one free child per adult admission. The space is divided into sections and roped off so that visitors are guided along in a timely manner. Was pleased to see the pulpit engraved with William Carey’s motto as well as the coronation chair. Crowded but we were still able to move around pretty freely.

Astonishing, in a word. A display of treasure from top to bottom: carved, gilded, painted, sculpted, engraved riches in every imaginable material by the finest artists and artisans dating to medieval times. Centuries of sacred objects surround the tombs of monarchs and great names from history. It’s overwhelming. If the goal of sacred space is to inspire awe, surely this is one of the finest representations. The intersection of faith and country is interwoven at every step and offers ample opportunity for considering how both shaped each other in the course of English history. It’s difficult not to wonder where such abundance came from. Tacit in the conversation are the lives and sacrifices of centuries of common people who contributed willingly or not to the sumptuous visual feast. Religious service was happening during our visit, with candles lit and the faithful present at the service while tourists streamed through. In this way, it seemed, that the Abbey was indeed for everyone to find in it what they wished. A place for the people, for the elite, for the church, for the crown, for the seeker and the tourist alike.

The line was long! But it was brisk out. So it wasn’t too bad. We had our tickets printed out already. It was so nice when we entered. I cannot remember if they checked our bags, but I think they did. So be prepared for that, just in case. It was really nice inside. We saw all of the tombs and statues of poets, statesmen, scientists, and thinkers among other notable individuals. We had listening devices to guide us along the way. I think that may have been extra. Get your ticket well in advance. Print it out just in case.
