The Houses of Parliament and Big Ben

The Houses of Parliament, also known as the Palace of Westminster, is one of the most iconic landmarks in London, England. It is home to the UK Parliament and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Adjacent to it stands the famous clock tower, commonly referred to as Big Ben, which is actually the name of the Great Bell inside the tower.

History of The Houses of Parliament

The original structure dates back to the 11th century, but the current Gothic-style building was completed in 1876 after a fire destroyed much of the original palace in 1834. The architecture is a stunning example of Victorian Gothic design, featuring intricate details and grand towers.

Big Ben: The Iconic Clock Tower

Big Ben is not just a clock; it is a symbol of London and British culture. The clock tower was renamed the Elizabeth Tower in 2012 to mark Queen Elizabeth II's Diamond Jubilee. The tower stands at 316 feet tall and the clock is renowned for its accuracy and its massive bell, which weighs over 13 tons.

A must-see London landmark! During my last visit to Big Ben, I took the Underground, which was very convenient. Westminster Station is located just opposite Big Ben—making it super easy to reach. As soon as you step out, you're greeted with one of the most iconic views in London. For the best photos, I recommend heading to the square right near Big Ben (Parliament Square). From there, you get stunning angles of both the clock tower and the Houses of Parliament. It’s a perfect spot for capturing memories, especially on a clear day!
