The Houses of Parliament and Big Ben

The Houses of Parliament, also known as the Palace of Westminster, is one of the most iconic landmarks in London, England. It is home to the UK Parliament and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Adjacent to it stands the famous clock tower, commonly referred to as Big Ben, which is actually the name of the Great Bell inside the tower.

History of The Houses of Parliament

The original structure dates back to the 11th century, but the current Gothic-style building was completed in 1876 after a fire destroyed much of the original palace in 1834. The architecture is a stunning example of Victorian Gothic design, featuring intricate details and grand towers.

Big Ben: The Iconic Clock Tower

Big Ben is not just a clock; it is a symbol of London and British culture. The clock tower was renamed the Elizabeth Tower in 2012 to mark Queen Elizabeth II's Diamond Jubilee. The tower stands at 316 feet tall and the clock is renowned for its accuracy and its massive bell, which weighs over 13 tons.

As a student living in London and working part-time near Big Ben, I feel lucky to see this historic landmark almost every day. No matter how busy life gets, walking past Big Ben always gives me a sense of pride and reminds me why London is so special. The area is lively, full of tourists, and always buzzing with energy. It’s also very well-connected, making it easy to get to university or work. Big Ben isn’t just a tourist spot for me—it’s part of my daily life, and it never gets old!

Visiting Big Ben was a great experience! The tower is not only impressive in size but also rich in history. Standing in front of it felt like stepping into a piece of London’s past. It’s beautifully maintained and a must see landmark for anyone visiting the city.

A London must visit tourist and historical place. You can see it from far. This is just opposite to Westminster tube station. This is in the area with multiple tourist spots, in a good day you can walk and enjoy all of them on foot. Do expect heavy crowd. At the tube station you have coffee and bakery options for quick bite. Find some good spots to take pictures with the Big Ben. I will suggest to take pictures from Westminster Bridge also.
