Zurich Opera House & Sechseläutenplatz (aka Opera Square) At the edge of Lake Zurich, the Zurich Opera House is a jewel of neoclassical architecture. Since opening in 1891, this grand venue has hosted some of the world’s most renowned composers, conductors, and performers, cementing its reputation as one of Europe’s finest opera houses. Just outside, the expansive Sechseläutenplatz, made of over 100'000 beautiful quarzite pieces from Vals, offers a stark contrast: once a swampy ground outside the medieval city walls, it has transformed into one of Zurich’s liveliest gathering spots. It’s here that the city welcomes spring with the annual Sechseläuten Festival, culminating in the burning of the Böögg, a snowman effigy whose fiery fate is said to predict the length of winter. But pause for a just a moment, and you might feel the echoes of a different past—beneath your feet lie the remnants of an ancient Neolitical settlement, a forgotten layer of Zurich’s long and layered history. If you want to know more, venture into the Operas garage (level -2)! Just trust me in this one! You'll be surprised!

We didn't go inside for any performance but it was nice outside that day. There were a big Christmas tree and lights around the fair at night. Food was just OK. We enjoyed lights, activities there.

A great place and a great dance program. I like the welcoming atmosphere. You have bars at each level and it is also easy to enjoy fresh air or the lakeview during intermissions. Seats are comfortable and you have a good view even at the side of the last level. The square in front of it is currently occupied by the KINE circus, otherwise the view would have been even nicer. The only thing I would suggest is to show somewhere the list of dancers performing each night. I watched the triple bills AUTOGRAPHS combining Crystal Pite, Wayne McGregor and William Forsythe. I will definitely come back again.
