Great views and walking experience here. The top of the fort to the claustrophobic stairways all have great photo locations. Do beware of heat if you go in the midday hours.

We showed up, bought tickets at the gate without a tour. Pretty good views over the city. 35 thousand COP for entry for tourists, which I would say is worth it since the fort is a neat thing to check out. Theres a gift shop and some information about the fort at the top tier. Theres also washrooms in some areas of the fort. You're pretty much outside the whole time so make sure you have a hat/sunscreen, and keep to the shade where you can.

My advice is to leave a lot of time to explore this huge and historic fort. It is a massive fortress located on the hill of San Lázaro in Cartagena, Colombia. Built by the Spanish during the colonial era, it is considered the greatest fortress ever constructed by Spain in its colonies and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Initial construction began in 1536, with major expansions in 1639, 1657. Its main purpose was to defend Cartagena, a key port for Spanish trade in the Caribbean, against pirates and foreign invasions, notably from the English and French. It was attacked several times, including by the French in 1697 and the British in 1741, but was never permanently conquered. When walking around the design is incredibly impressive because of the interconnected bastions and a complex tunnel system for defense, communication, evacuation and intricate maze of tunnels, artillery vantage points, and thick defensive walls.
