Was recommended this by a fellow passenger. Walked from the cruise terminal and it was about 45 minute walk. Signage was not very good when you got to the parkland. Very interesting but only one floor is about NZ participating in WW1 and WW2, . Very interesting floor regarding Maori culture.

Auckland War Memorial Museum – A Pleasant Surprise! What a hidden gem! I honestly didn’t expect the Auckland War Memorial Museum to be such an enriching experience, but it turned out to be one of the best museums I’ve visited in a long time. The building itself is stunning, with its mix of grandeur and serenity, and the exhibits are beautifully curated. From New Zealand’s rich cultural history to the moving war memorials, each display felt thoughtfully designed, offering insight and reflection in equal measure. The museum strikes that perfect balance – it’s educational without being overwhelming, emotional without feeling heavy. There’s something for everyone, whether you’re a history buff or just looking to spend a few hours soaking in the stories of this incredible place. Definitely a must-visit when in Auckland. I left feeling inspired, grateful, and even a little bit in awe.

Unfortunately, half the rooms were closed due to asbestos needing to be taken care of but at least it was half price tickets for the month. That said, what's on display is fascinating, from all the animal and insect stuffings to skeletons of Moa and dinosaurs. There's a rich history of Auckland with some great interactive displays too. And let's not forget the military sections which are so well done. I'll have to return when the rest is available for viewing.
